Paola recycles with GreenPak

Paola Local Council has taken a decisive step to actively improve recycling in their locality as the Local Council has now teamed up with GreenPak, the MEPA authorised scheme operated by Green Dot Malta Ltd.

Paola LC appointed GreenPak to provide a superior waste separation infrastructure within the community which has been absent for months. The separated materials collected will be sent for recycling, in a revived push towards increasing the recovery of packaging materials in a sustainable way.

On their part, GreenPak will install new sets of recycling banks for plastic, metal, glass and paper which will be located in various areas around Paola, as well as manage collections throughout the week including Saturdays from shops and small businesses. In addition, free recycling bags will be distributed to each household to encourage ‘Recycling on Tuesdays’.

Our expertise and amenities have shown that we can help Local Councils achieve a higher environmental performance in an economically viable manner. One way of achieving this is through a combination of methods, which include the provision of recycling banks, kerbside collections and direct collections from commercial outlets. GreenPak makes it very easy and practical for all residents and the business community of Paola to separate waste."

Meanwhile, in line with GreenPak’s values, educational programmes will contribute in raising more awareness within the Paola community about the importance of recycling and the separation of waste.

"Apart from putting into practice environmental consciousness and improve the locality’s overall environment, this professional approach will reduce costs for Paola’s Local Council as, from now, less waste will be sent to landfills and hence less fees will be paid. The money saved by the Local Council would be directed to other worthwhile projects for the benefit of all Paola residents," added Ing Schembri.

The Mayor of Paola, Mr. Dominic Grima, said: "This local waste recycling partnership will be instrumental in our community’s drive towards wider sustainable waste management objectives by disposing of waste in environmentally acceptable ways. In the short term, we need to work on ways how to reduce levels of waste through the supply chain so that we can effectively manage the waste generated by local commercial outlets more sustainably."

Residents in the localities long serviced by GreenPak have been continuously rewarded for their efforts and commitment to increase recycling. With the distribution of over a million recycling bags, most localities registered improvements in their respective recycling participation. GreenPak followed up by launching a Reward-Reuse-Recycle (3R) campaign in appreciation of the public’s commitment towards recycling more.

Since November 2010, GreenPak representatives have been given out over 500 hampers with free gifts to unsuspecting residents who have through the use of the recycling bag door-to-door collections or by disposing their separated waste in GreenPak’s recycling banks have helped make a difference in their locality.
