Dan ifisser zieda ta’ 2,500 tunnellata ta’ skart riciklabbli li kien separat fuq l-istess perjodu tas-sena li ghaddiet. Cifri li nghataw mis-Segretarju Parlamentari responsabbli mill-Kunsilli Lokali Chris Said, waqt konferenza tal-ahbarijiet f’H’Attard u li matulha tnediet EKO FESTA 2010, juru li fl-ewwel sitt xhur ta’ din is-sena ingabru 4,500 tunnellata ta’ skart separat permezz tal-borza l-griza. Importers, manufacturers, producers, or anyone doing trade in the Maltese market is required to recover and recycle the packaging generated through such an activity. By joining the GreenPak Scheme, an operator automatically transfers these obligations onto the scheme. The legal requirements are defined in LN277 of 2006.

Hilton Malta is ushering in the era of the “ecotel” to Malta by participating in GreenPak’s Hotel Waste Recovery scheme. Since commencing its collaboration with GreenPak in a few months, Hilton Malta has diverted an estimated 12 tonnes of glass, 2 tonnes of plastic, 800kg tonnes of metal and 8 tonnes of cardboard from landfill.

Companies that make no financial contribution for the recovery of their packaging but still 'claim' that they are doing so by trading products that carry the Green Dot mark are deceiving consumers. Known in the industry as 'free riders' such companies also bring a distortion in competition and are damaging the Maltese environment.
