GreenPak lends a hand

Eight-year-old Maleck Hajmousa, who attends the St Theresa College at Sta Venera Primary School, has been given a helping hand by GreenPak towards his goal in becoming more independent.

Maleck’s family alone has happily collected 1.3 tonnes of plastic bottle caps, which means almost 260,000 caps, as part of GreenPak’s 2011 campaign Irrickla ghall-Istrina - ‘Recycle for Istrina’.   For the family’s recycling initiative and to help Maleck’s dream come true as soon as possible, Greenpak Coop Society, operators of GreenPak Scheme donated the sum of 650 euro that will serve as an instant down payment for a new power wheelchair.

"We admire Maleck’s family initiative to collect as many plastic bottle caps as possible from their relatives and friends for recycling, rather than ending up in the landfills.  This eco-friendly gesture could not go unrecognised, therefore upon discovering Maleck’s situation, GreenPak decided to help young Maleck to move easily around."  said Denise Vassallo, Senior Manager at GreenPak Coop Society.

"This is another step in GreenPak’s success of combining education and social responsibility through recycling. Our investment in various educational campaigns - whether among primary and secondary school students, or in various localities in Malta and Gozo - are serving to raise more awareness about the importance and social benefits of recycling," added Ms Vassallo.

GreenPak’s  initiative Irrickla ghall-Istrina - ‘Recycle for Istrina’, which aimed  to collect funds for Istrina 2011 through recycling practices, encouraged primary school students to contribute to their local charities while increasing their commitment to recycling.

GreenPak Coop Society had supplied some 50 primary schools with recycling containers into which students placed any plastic caps they collected.
